🌿: What is a Shishi-odoshi?
It’s a bamboo water fountain designed to create a rhythmic, meditative sound.
Originally used to scare away animals from gardens and crops, it has become a beloved element in Zen gardens for its calming aesthetic and sound.
The mechanism involves a pivoting bamboo tube that fills with water, tips to empty, and then strikes a rock with a soft “clack”—creating a peaceful, repeating cycle.
🌿 The Sound of Stillness: The Story of the Shishi-odoshi
In the renewed Zen garden at the entrance of Thepprasit Cosy 1, a quiet rhythm returns. A slender bamboo arm slowly fills with water, tips forward, and gently strikes a stone. The sound is soft, deliberate—like a breath between thoughts. This is the Shishi-odoshi (鹿威し), a traditional Japanese water feature whose name means “deer-scarer.”
Originally designed to protect gardens from wandering animals, the Shishi-odoshi has evolved into something more poetic: a reminder to pause. To listen. To be present.
For us, it’s not just a garden ornament—it’s a philosophy in motion. The gentle knock of bamboo against stone is a heartbeat of stillness. A rhythm that invites guests to slow down, breathe deeply, and arrive fully—not just at the villa, but in themselves.
This new Shishi-odoshi will be handcrafted as part of our garden renewal, alongside a small stone pagoda and a ceramic water jar. Together, they form a space of quiet welcome—a threshold between the outside world and the story that unfolds within.
